The first two women to ever graduate from the US Army Ranger School have been named by a local newspaper.

The Columbus Ledger-Inquirer identified the soldiers as military police officer Kristen Griest and helicopter pilot Shaye Haver.

On Saturday (AEST), the women will have the four Ranger stars added to their uniforms at Fort Brenning in Alabama-Georgia, signifying their accomplishment.

Men who pass the gruelling test, which includes starvation, physical endurance and parachuting, become eligible to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment, one of the most elite infantry units in the world.

Army rules currently bar women from serving in the Regiment, but there is speculation this will change once enough female soldiers pass the test.
