Air New Zealand has again pushed the boundaries of in-flight videos, with the latest seeing the hardened All Blacks rugby players step out of their jerseys and into the set of a Men In Black parody.

The airline is famous for revitalising the often nauseating in-flight safety video and branding it with an iconic New Zealand spin.

The latest takes elements of the 1990s classic movie Men In Black, interspersing it with directions on bracing for an emergency landing and how to properly fasten the seatbelt, overlaid with rap from the All Blacks players themselves.

All Blacks captain Richie McCaw and Dan Carter star in the video as agents, with coach Steve Hansen and teammates also getting in on the routine.

American actor Rip Torn reprises his role as chief of the Men in Black with Wallabies great David Campese, former England captain Martin Johnson and former Argentinean captain Agustin Pichot making cameo appearances.

Air New Zealand head of global brand development Jodi Williams said the airline was “crazy about rugby”.

“We’ve worked with the All Blacks on previous safety videos and thought it would be fun this time around to have them step into the shoes of the other highly trained Men in Black,” she said.

“The result is not only entertaining but makes people sit up and take notice of the key safety messages.”

Men in Black Safety Defenders will be progressively rolled out across Air New Zealand’s fleet from Thursday.

McCaw said the team had enjoyed the opportunity.

“We had a lot of laughs on set and were blown away by Israel’s [Dagg] hidden singing talent. If rugby doesn’t work out for him he clearly has a promising career as a back-up singer,” he said.
