Cairns Liberal National MP Warren Entsch has raised the issue of same-sex marriage in his party room, sparking discussion on whether to allow a free vote on the matter.

SkyNews reported there was debate in the party room on Tuesday morning over whether to grant members a conscience vote.

The bill – to be moved by Liberal MP Warren Entsch and supported by Labor, the Greens and independents – is expected to go to parliament’s selection committee later on Tuesday.

It’s also been confirmed the cross-party bill may be introduced to parliament on August 17.

Last month, Labor leader Bill Shorten committed to allowing his Party’s members a conscious vote on gay marriage.

SkyNews added that a possible poll on whether to allow a conscience vote on same-sex marriage has been put off for a later date.

A spokesman for Mr Entsch told News Corp that the Member for Leichhardt did not want to play the matter out in the media, but that the MP still wanting to introduce the Bill during this sitting of Federal Parliament.

The cross-party bill introduced in June is supported by Mr Entsch, Liberal Teresa Gambaro, Terri Butler and Laurie Ferguson from Labor, Adam Bandt from the Greens and independent MPs Cathy McGowan and Andrew Wilkie.
