Kim Jong-un receives international peace prize

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has received an international peace prize from Indonesia.

The prize was awarded by the Sukarno Education Centre in Bali, which has in the past awarded the accolade to Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi and India’s Mahatma Gandhi.

The award commends Jong-un for his “peace, justice and humanity” and will be officially presented to the leader in September.

“We will give the award to President Kim Jong-un because he has been consistent in carrying out the ideals of the great leader, Kim Il-sung, which is to fight imperialism,” the award’s announcer and daughter of Indonesia’s founding president Rachmawati Soekarnoputri said.

“So this will be a sequel, where we give the award to Kim Jong-un for his persistence in fighting neo-colonialism.”

It’s an interesting choice for the foundation, considering the dictator has been accused of some of the worst breaches of human rights in history.

In January, the UN found the North Korean government “committed systematic human right abuses on a scale and gravity without parallel in the contemporary world – including extermination, murder, enslavement, torture, imprisonment, rape, forced abortions, and other sexual violence.”

The report held Kim Jong-un responsible for the continued abuse.

Ms Soekarnoputri dismissed the allegations as “Western propaganda” when talking to the AFP.

Indonesia and North Korea have enjoyed friendly bilateral relations since the 1960s.
