GoT-inspired course to be studied in Norway

Europe be warned, Norway is training a new army of vikings.

The good news is they’re more interested in white walkers than pillaging Britain.

Inspired by the never-ending saga that is the HBO series, Game of Thrones and maybe to an ironic and lesser extent Vikings – one school in Norway is adding sword work as well as hunting, fishing and boating skills to the curriculum.

Viking studies will now be taught alongside humanities, sciences and mathematics.

Seljord Folk High School principal Arve Husby told a Norwegian broadcaster the show had created more desire to learn about the country’s heritage.

“We see a large number of applicants who have applied for different reasons,” the school’s principal, Arve Husby, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

“Some have become interested through TV series and others want to learn handicraft. We give a high quality education, and if TV series get people interested, we are happy,” she said.

The task of training the new generation of warriors has fallen on ‘unique’ teacher Jeppe Nordmann Garly.

According to the school’s website, interest in the position was strong to say the least.

“Over 26,000 people saw the job advertisement via social media. Twenty-two candidates left applications. Jeppe Nordmann Garly from Denmark has pulled the longest straw…he seems to be exceptionally well qualified for the job,” the school said on their website.
