#PutYourWalletsOut in memory of Bishop

A monetary trend started circulating on social media following the resignation of Federal Speaker Bronwyn Bishop.

Mrs Bishop resigned from her role on Sunday, buckling under pressure generated from her travel expenses scandal – including spending more than $5000 on a chartered helicopter flight from Melbourne to Geelong, to attend a Liberal Party function.

The hashtag #‎PutYourWalletsOut‬ started trending on social media where people took photos of their purses and wallets in light of the saga.

• Bishop’s failure shared by her Prime Minister

Steven Lopez, who was an independent candidate in the recent NSW election for the seat of Granville, concocted the idea.

“When I ran outside to snap a picture of my wallet (which if I ever lose most of Australia will now know what it looks like), it had never crossed my mind that the hashtag would get this sort of attention,” Mr Lopez wrote on his Facebook page.

“I’m glad I could help provide Australians an outlet for their disgust and/or rage in a very simple yet effective way with the behaviours of not only Bronwyn Bishop but most of our politicians.

“Politicians like Bronwyn – and let’s face it, there are lots of them – help themselves plenty to our money, maybe we can make it easier for them.”

The trend caught on nationwide and globally.
