Question time has been cancelled for the first parliamentary sitting, with just two items on the agenda.

Parliament resumes in Canberra on August 10 after a six-week winter break.

The first item of business in the House of Representatives will be the election of a Speaker, to replace Bronwyn Bishop who resigned on Sunday over an expenses scandal.

• #PutYourWalletsOut in memory of Bishop
• Philip Ruddock wants to be Speaker
• Bronwyn Bishop resigns after expenses saga

The House will then suspend briefly and resume to speak on a condolence motion for the late West Australian Liberal MP Don Randall.

After the condolence motion, as a mark of respect the House will suspend until 7pm when it will consider private members’ business, before an adjournment debate at 9pm.

Mrs Bishop resigned from her role as Speaker on Sunday, buckling under pressure generated from her travel expenses scandal – including spending more than $5000 on a chartered helicopter flight from Melbourne to Geelong, to attend a Liberal Party function.

Questions were also raised about a $600 expense claim by Mrs Bishop, while also attending a wedding of former Liberal colleague Sophie Mirabella in Albury, in 2006.

As well as claiming $288 in travel allowances, to stay in Brisbane on the night of MP Teresa Gambaro’s wedding in April 2007.
