A man has been charged over the disappearance of a university student who went missing for more than 24 hours after she went for a jog in Bendigo.

Daniel Reimers, 38, of Kingower, faced the Bendigo Magistrates Court on Friday where the nature of the charges against him were suppressed.

He sat behind protective glass with his head bowed for most of the 10 minute hearing.

Reimers did not seek bail and Magistrate Richard Wright remanded him in custody until November 11.

A massive search was sparked after the woman was reported missing on Wednesday afternoon after going for a run at a local bush reserve known as One Tree Hill in Bendigo.

The woman – who cannot be named – was located by police patrolling a street in Maiden Gully at 4.50pm on Thursday, about 13km from where she disappeared.

It is unclear where in the car the woman was found and how she ended up in there.

The woman was reportedly found as searchers were about to call off the search, with plans to resume in the morning.

Inspector Mick West told the Herald Sun on Friday that information from the public had led to the discovery of the woman.

“We were looking for a particular coloured vehicle,” Insp West said.

“They were just out on patrol however there was a snippet of information that came in that turned out to be very fortuitous.”

The search effort, which included the police Air Wing and, the dog squad and State Emergency Service, had been focused on an area of bushland near the One Tree Hill lookout, about 7km south-east of Bendigo.

The 18-year-old’s disappearance spawned serious concerns for her welfare, with temperatures dropping to nearly minus two degrees in Bendigo on Wednesday night, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
