A little too much of this common drug can be fatal

We think nothing of popping one, two, even three capsules when we have a nasty headache, but paracetamol could be more dangerous than we think.

A British teen has died after accidentally overdosing on the drug after complaining of a stomach ache.

Georgia Littlewood, 17, called in sick to work on March 28, before apparently taking three times the recommended dose of the common pain relief drug.

Ms Littlewood, who was staying with her husband, began vomiting early in the morning and was later rushed to hospital when her condition deteriorated.

Ms Littlewood told the doctors that she had taken paracetamol, but said she hadn’t meant to hurt himself.

Doctors put Ms Littlewood on the waiting list for a liver transplant but unfortunately she died of acute liver failure a day later at St. James Hospital in Leeds.

During an inquest into her death, Ms Littlewood’s mother said she didn’t believe her daughter meant to kill herself.

“On the day she was taken into hospital she was mumbling and didn’t know who I was. I knew something was wrong straight away.

“I believe the overdose was a complete accident.

“I don’t think she would have known the correct doses for taking paracetamol and would have taken them for a headache. She would not have known the effect it would have had on her.”

The inquest found that Ms Littlewood’s death had been an accident, with Assistant Coroner Mary Burke saying, “It seems likely to me that Georgia was not fully away of the apparent toxic effect of paracetamol which can develop over a relatively short period of time.”

“It is important to use these circumstances to highlight to members of the public the risk that are present.”

Ms Littlewood’s parents said they would like to see greater warnings attached to paracetamol, and that it should not be sold over the counter.

The teen had recently completed a beauty course and was working in administration at a hair salon.
