‘Tone down relentlessly gay yard,’ woman told

A woman has vowed to make her front yard even more “relentlessly gay” after a Christian neighbour left a threatening note about a display of rainbow-coloured lamps.

The US widow and mother-of-four, Julie Baker, from Baltimore, found the note jammed inside her front door by an anonymous neighbour who told her to “tone it down” because “there is a Christian neighbourhood and there are children”, friend Eleanor Justice explained on Facebook.

The note also read: “Your yard is becoming Relentlessly Gay! Keep it up and I will be forced to call the police on You! Your kind need to have Respect for GOD.”

But Ms Baker hit back at the outrageous note by creating a fundraising campaign to add more rainbow colour to her yard, in an effort to stand up to homophobia.

“I am starting this fundraiser so I can work to make my home even more “relentlessly gay”, Ms Baker wrote on the gofundme.com page.

“If we go high enough, I will see if I can get a Rainbow Roof!

“Put simply, I am a widow and the mother of four children, my youngest in high school and I WILL NOT Relent to Hatred. Instead, I will battle it with whimsy and beauty and laughter and love, wrapped around my home, yard and family!!!”

She also posted a video to YouTube speaking passionately about the issue.

“Thousands of people that I don’t even know are standing up and saying, ‘it’s okay to be relentless’,” Ms Baker said on the clip.

“Something that … was supposed to be an insult, now is suddenly this wonderful thing. And why not be relentlessly you? Why not be relentlessly fabulous? Why be subtle? Why be shy? Why hide it? It’s okay to be who you are.

“It might irritate the person who did it but it’s not about irritating the person who did it, it’s about being relentlessly joyful, and being damn proud of it and just sharing that with other people.”
