US Secretary of State John Kerry has been flown to a Geneva hospital with a broken leg following a bicycle accident in the French Alps.

Kerry, 71, was taken by helicopter to Geneva University Hospital, where he is conscious and in a stable condition with a leg injury, his spokesman John Kirby said.

“The secretary is stable and never lost consciousness,” Kirby said.

“His injury is not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.”

Kerry plans to return to the United States later on Sunday after X-rays confirmed he fractured his right femur.

He will receive further treatment in Boston.

Sunday’s accident occurred in Scionzier, a town near the border with Switzerland.

Kerry was attended by a physician and paramedics travelling in his motorcade, Kirby said.

He had conducted talks on Saturday in Geneva with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as part of efforts to forge a comprehensive agreement on Tehran’s disputed nuclear program before a June 30 deadline.

He had been due to fly to Madrid later on Sunday to meet with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and King Felipe VI.

Kerry was scheduled on Tuesday to travel to Paris to hold talks with counterparts from countries participating in the military coalition targeting the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
