A 37-year-old man is in custody over the shooting of a woman at a Northcote organic food store early Friday morning.

The man is reported to have handed himself into police Friday afternoon.

Police were called to a residence located behind Joe’s Organic Market on Victoria Road about 4.30am on Friday.

They found a 22-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her leg and facial injuries.

The woman was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and was last known to be in a stable condition.

Fairfax Media reported it believed the woman and the gunman were known to each other.

Victoria Police Detective Acting Sergeant Mick Drew said police were yet to speak to the victim who remained in hospital.

“Her condition is stable but we won’t be able to speak to her for some time yet,” Det Sgt Drew said at a press conference at the scene.

Det Sgt Drew said
the woman was known to police.

A man, aged in his 50s and who also lived at the property, found the injured woman and contacted police, he said.

“He is assisting police but what he has informed us, we can’t go into that at this stage,” Det Sgt Drew said.

“We’re not entirely sure that the shooting has occurred here.”

There are no other witnesses and police have asked for anyone with information to come forward.
