Six US police officers who arrested African-American man Freddie Gray, 25, will stand trial in the state of Baltimore for his death.

In April this year, Mr Gray died as a result of a broken spinal cord while being transported in the back of the officers’ van.

On Friday morning, a grand jury indicted the officers, who had been suspended without pay pending the verdict, to face a range of criminal charges, some of which were more serious than prosecutors originally argued for.

Baltimore state attorney Marilyn Mosby charged the officers on May 1.

The police had arrested Mr Gray for alleged possession of a knife.

His death a week after his arrest triggered days of riots and looting in Baltimore.

The officers charged were reportedly Garrett Miller, Alicia White, Edward Nero, Caesar Goodson Jr, Brian Rice and William Porter.

The grand jury was instructed to decide whether the prosecution had enough evidence to proceed to trial, not whether the accused were guilty or innocent.

The case was due to be heard on May 27.
