Melbourne teen killed in Middle East: report

A Melbourne teenager who was school friends with slain terrorism suspect Numan Haider has reportedly become the latest Australian killed fighting with the Islamic State.

According to a News Corp report, the family of Irfaan Hussein confirmed their son had been killed in March, but the circumstances of his death remain unclear.

There is speculation Hussein, 19, was killed in either a bomb blast or was beheaded by Islamic State militants for trying to return to Melbourne.

The teenager attended Lyndale Secondary College in Dandenong and was reportedly close friends with Numan Haider, the teenager who was shot and killed after stabbing police officers at a police station in Endeavour Hills in September last year.

The two boys started attending the controversial Al-Furqan Islamic Centre in Dandenong after finishing school in 2013 and lost contact with friends.

Hussein reportedly went by the name of Abu Sufyan Al Australi and worked as a middleman between Islamic State recruiters and teenagers wanting to travel to the Middle East.

Two other Lyndale Secondary College students who were believed to be friends of Hussein were arrested last month in counter-terror raids in Melbourne’s southeast, but were released without charge.
