A male tourist has died and three of his companions have been injured in a four-wheel drive rollover crash on the Kakadu Highway.

Three of the man’s travelling companions were flown to Darwin after the crash, which police said happened about 12:40pm Sunday, about 220km from Darwin.

Senior Sergeant Mark Casey, from the NT Police Major Crash Investigation Unit, said the man, who has not been identified, was thrown from the car and suffered fatal injuries.

“At this stage we understand there were four foreign tourists in the four-wheel drive at the time of the crash.

“The three other people have been injured. The male and two females will be airlifted to Darwin with CareFlight.

“It is believed the fatally injured male was a passenger.”

Senior Sergeant Casey said police would be investigating the circumstances around the crash.

The death takes the NT 2015 road toll to 13 compared to 18 at the same time last year.
