Her first name appears to be a nod to her grandfather Prince Charles of Wales, while her middle name is a tribute to her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s middle name is also Elizabeth.

Charlotte also bears the name of her late grandmother, Princess Diana of Wales, who died when her father Prince William was 15.

The princess was born at 8.45am local time on Saturday, with bookmakers taking bets on names like Alice, Diana and Victoria ahead of the birth.

On Monday, Charlotte was honoured with gunfire salutes across London at Hyde Park and the Tower of London, while the bells rang at Westminster Abbey where her parents were married four years ago.

She is the first royal female who won’t be overtaken by her younger brothers in the succession line after a change to the law in 2012.
