Labor holds healthy lead: poll

The Labor Party maintains a clear lead over the besieged Abbott government in a new poll, and would easily win a federal election.

According to the latest Morgan Poll, Labor is comfortably ahead of the Coalition on a two-party-preferred basis, 53 per cent to 47 per cent.

Labor is also preferred in almost every state and has a two-party preferred lead in Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland.

The poll follows the Victorian and Queensland elections, which saw both first-term Liberal-National governments removed from office.

According to the poll, primary support for the Coalition at the federal level fell by two points to 38.5 per cent, while Labor’s increased by the same amount to 38 per cent.

Primary support for Katter’s Australian Party was unchanged at 1.5 per cent, ahead of Clive Palmer’s Palmer United Party, which had a primary vote of 1 per cent.

Support for The Greens was down 0.5 per cent to 12 per cent.

The poll comes as Prime Minister Tony Abbott prepares for the upcoming May federal budget, which will be forced to grapple with falling revenue.

At last week’s Council of Australian Governments meeting, WA Premier Colin Barnett expressed his anger about proposed cuts to the state’s share of GST revenue.

Northern Territory Liberal Chief Minister Adam Giles lashed out at Mr Barnett, saying he didn’t travel to the COAG meeting to hear other states complain.
