Accused killer’s family helping in Stephanie investigation

The family of the school cleaner accused of murdering Stephanie Scott is assisting police with their investigation after the 24-year-old’s alleged refusal to co-operate.

According to Fairfax media, Vincent Stanford’s mother and brother have travelled to the town of Leeton in NSW, and have spent “countless hours” helping police with their inquiries.

Ms Scott, 26, disappeared on Easter Sunday a week before her wedding to her childhood sweetheart. She was missing for five days before her charred body was located in an isolated national park.

Mr Stanford’s mother Anika and brother Luke reportedly assisted detectives in locating Ms Scott’s body at the Cocoparra National Park, a location where the Stanford family had holidayed in the past.

The young school cleaner was understood to be familiar with the area and the national park’s winding roads.

The Stanford family were believed to be in a motel in the small town 600km west of Sydney.

Police arrested Mr Stanford on Wednesday and said they had overwhelming evidence against him despite Ms Scott’s car and body still missing at the time.

Her car was found abandoned in a paddock outside of Leeton on Thursday morning.

A post-mortem will be conducted on Ms Scott’s body in Sydney on Monday morning, which will reveal the exact cause of the young teacher’s death.

Hundreds of people attended a memorial for Ms Scott on Saturday on the day she was supposed to be married, with family, friends and police comforting her bereft fiance, Aaron Leeson-Woolley.

A sunrise hot air balloon memorial was held in her home town of Canowindra on Sunday morning.

Police now turn their investigation to The Netherlands as they build a case against Tasmanian-born Mr Stanford, who spent 10 years living in Europe before moving to Australia several years ago.

Authorities allege he murdered Ms Scott sometime on Easter Sunday before dumping her body.

Mr Stanford remains behind bars and will reappear in Griffith Local Court in June.
