Abbott, Hockey face poll fight

Conflicting results in two new polls show the Prime Minister winning back support from voters ahead but would still struggle to win an election.

According to a Newspoll published in The Australian, the Coalition government holds a five-point lead on the primary vote, the biggest margin in seven months.

But a Fairfax Ipsos poll published on Monday has the government ahead of Labor, but shows their primary vote has waned by three points in recent weeks.

Both polls, however, show Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s popularity is improving while support for Mr Shorten is weakening.

In Newspoll, Mr Shorten posted his worst rating since becoming Labor leader, with an approval rating of just 33 per cent – the same as Mr Abbott.

The Labor leader’s disapproval rating sits at 51 per cent.

The Ipsos poll also has Mr Shorten’s approval sinking, falling by one point in recent weeks.

Mr Abbott appears to have shaken off the February leadership spill motion against him, however, with his approval rating surging by four points since March in Newspoll.

Support for the prime minister is also up two points in the Fairfax Ipsos poll to 34 per cent.

According to the Fairfax report, a challenge against Mr Abbott still looms, with Labor pulling ahead of the Coalition on a two-party-preferred basis, 54 to 46 per cent.

In a February Ipsos poll, the two-party-preferred margin was 51 to 49 per cent.

The Coalition government still leads on the primary vote in both polls, ahead of Labor 39 to 38 per cent in the Fairfax Ipsos poll, and 41 to 36 per cent in the Newspoll.
