Being famous has its drawbacks, and for Pope Francis, that means not being able to go out for a slice of pizza without being recognised.

Luckily, the religious leader is a well-loved man, and this week as he travelled through Naples in his Popemobile one man brought the pizzeria to him.

Pizza makers Vincenzo Cacialli and Antonio Greco made the special papal pie and then waited in the crowd to hand it to the Pontiff.

In the video posted on YouTube, Mr Cacialli yells “Papa! Papa!” before jumping the barrier and handing the religious leader the specially-decorated pie.

The thin crust creation was decorated with “Il Papa” spelt out in dough, and covered in yellow cherry tomatoes in reference of the Vatican’s yellow and white flag.

Speaking to CNN, the expert pizza maker said Pope Francis graciously accepted the pizza before telling Mr Cacialli he would enjoy it later.

“Giving a pizza you made with your own hands to the Pope is very emotional,” Mr Cacialli said.

“It’s really hard for me to express the value of this gesture for a man we really love and value, for a beautiful person full of humanity.”

Mr Cacialli’s father made pizza for former US president Bill Clinton when he visited Naples in the 1990s, and said he wanted to follow in his footsteps.

In a candid interview on Mexico television earlier in the month, Pope Francis, who is Argentinian, said he missed being anonymous.

“The only thing I would like is to go out one day, without being recognised, and go to a pizzeria for a pizza,” he said.

“In Buenos Aires, I was a rover. I moved between parishes and certainly this habit has changed. . It has been hard work to change.”
