Trucks kill two pedestrians

Two pedestrians have been killed in separate accidents in a deadly morning on Melbourne roads, with one woman dead after being hit by a garbage truck.

The woman was on her way to work when she reportedly tripped at a pedestrian crossing on the corner of Collins and Spencer Street and was hit by the truck at 6.15am.

According to Fairfax, the garbage truck driver collapsed at the site of the fatal accident and was being treated by paramedics, but was not believed to be at fault.

Police said the 24-year-old woman’s partner received a call from her employer when she did not arrive for work. The man arrived at the scene to be told the deceased victim was his girlfriend.

Trams are being diverted to nearby La Trobe and Collins Street.

In a separate accident, a man was also hit by a truck on Tuesday morning in the industrial area of Brooklyn at 1.45am.
