Homes lost in WA bushfire

Several homes have been destroyed by a bushfire south of Perth after strong easterly winds pushed the blaze into Waroona town.

The fire was sparked by lightning and began in the steep terrain of the Darling Range to the town’s east.

An emergency warning remains in place for people in an area bounded by McDowell Street, South West Highway, McLartey Street and Paganini Road, but homes throughout the town are under threat with embers being blown far by the strong winds.

“They were so strong and pushing in our direction,” said local resident Marissa Tiedemann, who lives about 1km from the fire front.

“I’ve been up since 3am.”

Ms Tiedemann said she’d seen burnt leaves at her front door.

Several homes had been lost in a beautiful area, she said.

“That’s the risk that you take, especially in the wooded areas where it all started.”

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has not confirmed the property losses, but says at least 10 power poles have been destroyed and about 28 customers are without power.

The evacuation point is the nearby town of Harvey.

Locals are staying calm, buoyed by the efforts of 150 firefighters and water-bombing aircraft.

About 325 hectares have been burnt by the fire, which remains out of control and unpredictable.
