Campbell Newman set to lose Ashgrove seat: poll

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman looks set to lose his seat at the state election, with a new poll showing Mr Newman trailing his opponent by eight points just two days from the election.

A ReachTEL poll conducted on Wednesday shows Mr Newman is on track to lose the seat of Ashgrove to Labor candidate and former environment minister Kate Jones.

Ms Jones leads the premier, 46.5 to 42.3 per cent.

Despite the poor result for Mr Newman, a Sky News poll released on Wednesday shows the Liberal National Party appears headed for re-election.

Of those polled, 49 per cent said they would vote for the LNP at the election, while only 34 per cent would vote for Labor.

Mr Newman is also the more popular leader with voters, ahead of Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk by a margin of 48 to 35 per cent.

If Mr Newman loses his seat of Ashgrove, the LNP will be placed in the unusual position of having to look for a new leader and premier.

Despite trailing in the polls, Labor has made a remarkable recovery following their annihilation at the last election, which saw the ALP left with just seven of the 89 seats in parliament.

The ALP won two seats from the LNP in 2014, with large swings of 17 and 19 per cent.

Labor is expected to snatch between 20 and 30 seats from the LNP at the January 31 election, according to a Sky News report.

Support for the Greens has improved in Mr Newman’s seat of Ashgrove, with first preference support for Greens candidate Robert Hogg swelling from 5.4 to 8.2 per cent since the previous ReachTEL poll.

Mr Newman’s primary vote dropped from 43.7 to 42.3 per cent, while support for Ms Jones declined from 47.6 to 46.5 per cent.

Voters also expressed discontent with Mr Newman’s performance with 25 per cent of voters rating his performance as the member for Ashgrove as “very poor”.
