Queensland mum accused of killing baby girl

A young Queensland mother is to stand trial accused of the manslaughter of her infant daughter who died from brain injuries.

The baby was no more than eight weeks old when, bruised and battered, she was rushed to Redcliffe Hospital in May, 2012.

The baby’s father has been charged with the child’s murder and the mother, 24, with the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Neither can be named for legal reasons.

On Tuesday the mother was committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

She showed little emotion and did not enter a plea at her committal hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

The exact circumstances of the infant’s death haven’t been revealed but an autopsy found the child died from a blow or blows that caused brain damage.

The autopsy revealed injuries including multiple skull fractures, broken ribs, a broken arm, bruising to the child’s back and abrasions on its lip and nose.

A medical expert believes some of the injuries could have occurred more than a week before the child was rushed to hospital.

Pediatrician Jan Connors told the committal hearing she believed the injuries occurred within a time-frame of seven to 10 days.

“They may not have all occurred together, some may have been in a short period of time and some out to that period of time,” Dr Connors testified.

Her statement was among 65 submitted as evidence by the prosecution on Tuesday.

The accused woman, who lives in Brisbane and has another child, is on bail and must report to police weekly in the lead up to her trial.

The infant’s father is yet to face a committal hearing. His case is due to be mentioned in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on April 1.
