The Queensland Liberal National Party has pulled ahead of Labor in the polls with just over a week until the state election.

A ReachTEL poll conducted on Tuesday night found support for the LNP had grown by two per cent in the past fortnight, while support for Labor sunk two per cent.

Of those polled, 42 per cent said the LNP was their first preference, while 36.7 per cent said they would support the ALP at the January 28 election.

The margin has widened between the two parties since the last ReachTEL poll on January 6 where the LNP led, 40 per cent to 38 per cent.

Despite hard campaigning from Labor, including a campaign launch on Tuesday with Labor leader Bill Shorten, the LNP is also ahead on a two-party-preferred basis, 52 per cent to 48 per cent.

Mr Newman’s seat of Ashgrove is still on a knife-edge, and while he remains preferred LNP leader, Speaker Fiona Simpson has emerged as the public’s second choice for premier.

Campaign speed bumps

The poll results comes as both dust themselves off after confronting difficult issues on the campaign trail.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has helped reverse her party’s fortunes.

Enlivening what had been a fairly dull contest, both Campbell Newman and Annastacia  had to break with their scripts to defend themselves on Wednesday.

The premier rebuffed accusations of lying and being swayed by political donors, while the opposition leader denied having an entirely negative election strategy.

They were caught on the back-foot and will both be hoping to hit the reset button on Thursday.

Ms Palaszczuk hits the ground in Rockhampton, where she’s expected to address job losses in health under the LNP and Labor’s plan to employ more nurses at the local hospital.

Mr Newman will be pounding the pavement somewhere in the southeast of the state.

Queenslanders go to the polls on Saturday, 31 January.
