A 16-month-old panda has been captured on film frolicking in the snow with her mother in what may well be the cutest video of 2015 so far.

Bao Bao the giant panda cub, a resident at the National Zoo in Washington DC, appeared to be enjoying herself immensely as she tumbled and rolled her way down a snowy hill before jumping on her mother, Mei Xiang.

Bao Bao is one of only several hundred pandas born and raised in captivity. It is estimated that there could be fewer than 2000 pandas remaining in the wild.

In 2013 when Bao Bao was born, there were an unusually large number of giant panda births with zoos in Taiwan and Vienna Zoo also celebrating panda births as well as twin cubs in Atlanta Zoo.

In late-July 2014 a rare set of giant panda triplets were born at China’s Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou.

The three cubs were recently re-united in the same enclosure after the decision was made to rotate their time spent one-on-one with their mother so that she didn’t become overwhelmed.

On Christmas Eve Bao Bao spent 24 hours in a tree after touching a ‘hot wire’ which is part of the zoo’s security system to keep animals contained.

Bao Bao was reportedly spooked but her reaction was completely normal.

“Her reaction was to climb up a tree where she feels safe,” the zoo said on its Facebook page.

“This behavior is predictable. Bao Bao is perfectly fine and like all Zoo animals, she is still learning the boundaries of her habitat.”

The zoo said its great cats, seals and wolves also enjoyed the winter weather.
