Australians have been told to exercise caution if planning to travel to Indonesia with the risk of a terror attack elevated to high.

This comes as the US warns of a heightened terrorism threat against American banks and hotels in Indonesia’s second largest city, Surabaya.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs Smart Traveller website has since updated its own travel advice urging travellers to show a “high degree of caution” though it does not call for people to reconsider visiting Indonesia.

“We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia, including Bali, at this time due to the high threat of terrorist attack,” it said.

The Australian Government continues to advise Australians to reconsider their need to travel to specific areas within Indonesia known for terrorism and separatist conflict.

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said terrorism was treated as the highest of national security issues and Australia was monitoring the developing security threat in Indonesia “very closely”.

“I suggest if people have any concerns, they should ring our hotline or get in touch with our consulate in Bali or in Indonesia,” Ms Bishop said.

“But the information is all there on the Smart Traveller website.”

Changes have also been made on the Smart Traveller website for people entering and exiting the country, saying “Indonesian immigration staff may refuse entry to Indonesia to Australians with a criminal record”.
