Public could pay for funeral

The Australian public may have to foot the funeral bill for Man Haron Monis, the man responsible for a violent Sydney siege which left two people dead.

If no one comes forward to claim Monis’s body, taxpayers – including the hostages he held at gunpoint – could be funding his burial arrangements.

The autopsy on Monis, who was killed when his 16-hour siege of a Sydney cafe came to a violent end on Tuesday morning, began on Thursday and could be completed as early as Friday.

If his body isn’t claimed by his family, he will be given a “destitute funeral” by the Department of Health.

Members of the Muslim community have condemned Monis’s acts and called for his body to be dumped in the sea.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the head of a Islamic funeral home said Muslims “didn’t care” about Monis.

“Nobody’s going to do his funeral, no Muslim funeral home will accept him,” Amin Sayed, funeral director of the Lebanese Muslim Association, said.

“They can throw him in the bloody sea.”

The bodies of his two victims, Katrina Dawson, 38, and Tori Johnson, 34, were released to their families on Thursday night.
