High-level Qantas bosses quit

Two Qantas chief executives have quit as part of a major leadership reshuffle at the airline.

Qantas International CEO Simon Hickey and Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi have “decided to leave” the airline, a press release said.

Both men have been replaced internally.

Mr Hickey’s replacement is Andrew David, currently chief operating officer for Qantas Airways. Gareth Evans, currently chief financial officer for the Qantas Group, replaces Mr Strambi.

The roles and duties of various other senior staff have also been modified.

“This represents a flatter structure for the broader Qantas Group executive team,” said the press release.

The new structure will reportedly come into effect in the New Year. The last major restructure was in May 2012.

Despite intense criticism after the airline posted a $2.84 billion loss in August, Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce retains his position.

In a statement, Mr Joyce praised the outgoing executives.

“In a number of roles at Qantas, but especially as the CEOs of our domestic and international airlines, Lyell and Simon have helped build a stronger Qantas. I would like to thank them for their tremendous contribution and wish them well for the future,” Mr Joyce said.

“This new executive team will lead this work forward to deliver for our customers, shareholders and employees according to the strategy we have laid out,” said Mr Joyce.
