If Prime Minister Tony Abbott was punished by voters for his performance in 2014, then Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has emerged with a gold star.

An Essential Report commissioned by the ABC shows voters think Ms Bishop performed exceptionally well this year, rating her well above Mr Abbott, Treasurer Joe Hockey and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

• Julie Bishop goes ‘bananas’ at Abbott
• Bishop disobeys Abbott’s order

Forty-seven per cent of those polled said Ms Bishop had performed well in 2014, compared to a meagre 27 per cent for Mr Abbott.

Twenty-six per cent approved of Mr Shorten’s performance, while just 9 per cent were fans of newcomer Clive Palmer.

Greens leader Christine Milne was rated the second-worst performing politician in the report, with only 16 per cent of voters impressed with her performance.

The glowing scorecard comes with allegations of a confrontation between Ms Bishop and Mr Abbott over his decision not to send her to climate change talks in Peru.

In the end, Ms Bishop did attend the summit accompanied by Trade Minister Andrew Robb.
