Labor trumps Coalition in poll

Labor Leader Bill Shorten has surged ahead as preferred prime minister in the latest poll, with voters considering him more trustworthy and competent than Tony Abbott.

According to the latest Fairfax Ipsos poll, Mr Shorten is preferred leader on a significant margin, 47 per cent to 39, despite Mr Abbott calling 2014 a ‘year of achievement’ for the government.

Mr Abbott’s approval rating also plummeted, falling from 44 per cent in February to 38 per cent in December.

Voters surveyed credited Mr Abbott with having a firmer grasp on economic policy and the ability to make things happen.

Respondents thought Mr Shorten had a better grasp on social policy and greater support from his party.

The poll also puts the Labor Party ahead on a two-party preferred basis, 52 per cent to 48 per cent.

The Coalition has trailed in 90 per cent of the 91 polls published in 2014, according to a report by Fairfax, which is the worst performance of any government since 1972.

The government has struggled to pass many of its budget savings measures, with crossbench senators blocking the $7 GP co-payment and university deregulation.
