Members of parliament and judges could be randomly breath tested at work under a Victorian Labor government, in an attempt to restore “respect and integrity” to parliament.

Penalties such as docked pay and suspension from parliament could be enforced on MPs who break the rules.

Judges and MPs will be randomly breath tested at work under a Victorian Labor government, the opposition says.

Shadow attorney-general Martin Pakula said there were occasions when MPs were clearly over the limit in parliament, particularly in the evening.

“I think anyone who’s been in parliament knows that to be true,” Mr Pakula said.

The opposition said it would also cancel a planned $200,000 post-election victory party in parliament’s gardens, including food and alcohol to cater for 1000 people.

“Parliament shouldn’t be home to arrogance and waste,” the party said in a statement on Thursday.

The Victorian election will take place on Saturday, with polls showing Labor is tipped to take office.
