‘Irrational’ Lambie to make PUP split decision

Outspoken senator Jacqui Lambie will wait to make a decision on whether to split from the Palmer United Party until after a meeting with a family friend on Monday.

Tension between Senator Lambie and party leader Clive Palmer has dragged on for weeks, with the outspoken former soldier expected to announce she is quitting the party.

After a fashion makeover and weekend of soul searching in a Tasmanian log cabin Senator Lambie is still yet to decide on her political future.

She flew to Canberra on Sunday night ahead of the parliamentary sitting week.

Her chief of staff Rob Messenger told AAP any decision about Senator Lambie’s future would be made after a meeting with her family friend, Tasmanian barrister Glynn Williams late on Monday.

Mr Williams will be in Canberra on separate business lobbying the government on agriculture policy as president of the Tasmanian Poppy Growers group.

On Sunday, the senator hit back at allegations from Mr Palmer that she “infiltrated” PUP with plans to “blow it up”.

Mr Palmer said the outspoken Tasmanian was planted by someone powerful and ordered to “act irrationally”.

“When you start a new party like our party the established parties and others try to wreck it,” Mr Palmer told the ABC’s AM program.

“She’s been sent in there by someone to cause trouble and I think that’s the reality of it,” he said.

Speaking at Canberra Airport on Sunday night Senator Lambie denied Mr Palmer’s accusations.

“It’s a distraction,” she told reporters.

“Today I’m certainly a member of the Palmer United Party … yes, you know, tomorrow’s a new beginning.”
