Former Liberal Party leaders like John Howard and Philip Ruddock have been heckled and jeered by crowds at the state memorial service for former prime minister Gough Whitlam.

Current Prime Minister Tony Abbott was loudly booed on arrival by large crowds stationed out the Sydney Town Hall who are watching the service on television screens.

Mr Howard and Mr Ruddock were heckled on arrival by the crowd, with Mr Howard seen laughing in response to his unpopularity.

Current Labor Leader Bill Shorten and former Labor prime ministers Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating were greeted with loud cheers and whistles from bystanders.

Mr Hawke, who arrived with wife Blanche d’Alpuget, and Mr Keating, who arrived with ex-wife Annita van Iersel, were both given standing ovations by crowds.

Ms Gillard received the biggest applause from crowds and was given a standing ovation inside the Town Hall.

Thousands of people have arrived at the Sydney service for the popular Labor leader who passed away last month at the age of 98.

According to a report by Fairfax, many registered mourners who travelled from as far from Perth to attend the service were turned away, with the Sydney Town Hall packed to maximum capacity.
