State memorial for Gough Whitlam announced

The life and achievements of former prime minister Gough Whitlam will be honoured at a state memorial service on November 5.

The service will be held at the Sydney Town Hall from 11am.

• Demolition of Whitlam birthplace on hold
• Now for Whitlam, the suburb
• How Whitlam changed Australia for the better

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the memorial will commemorate Mr Whitlam’s service to the nation in the Royal Australian Air Force, as a parliamentarian, a prime minister and an ambassador.

“Again, on behalf of the Australian people, I extend my condolences to the Whitlam family on their loss,” Mr Abbott said in a statement on Friday.

Condolence books will be available to sign at Parliament House, Canberra and Sydney Town Hall until the day of the service.

Those wishing to attend should register by phoning 1800 146 713 before October 31.
