As news broke of the passing of former Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam, fans and admirers took to social media to share their memories of the political giant.

• Seven ways Gough Whitlam changed Australia

Many took the opportunity to thank the former Labor leader for his life-changing policy decisions.

Others chose to remember him for his compelling way with words, quoting some of his more memorable speeches.

Those lucky enough to have personal memories of the late leader shared them.

For some, music was the only way to communicate their sadness at his passing, with many sharing the 1993 tribute song ‘Gough’ by The Whitlams.

A musical interpretation of his famous “God save the Queen” dismissal speech also hit the web.

Finally, Mr Whitlam was remembered for his good nature and sense of humour, best exemplified by this video of him speaking to an uproarious crowd.

Finally, a 2001 ad for Leggos Italian sauces is evidence that, despite his prolific achievements, the late legend never took himself too seriously.
