The new face of Australian terror

A Sydney teenager who travelled to the Middle East to join Islamic State has issued a chilling death threat to his former homeland.

In a video message aimed “especially” at the Prime Minister and the Australian people, Abdullah Elmir, 17, from Bankstown in Western Sydney swore that he and his fellow terrorists would not stop fighting until they reach Australia and behead “every tyrant”.

“To Obama and to Tony Abbott I say this: these weapons that we have, these soldiers, we will not stop fighting, we will not put down our weapons, until we reach your lands, until we take the head of every tyrant,” Elmir said.

The young man appeared in the video on Monday night under the pseudonym ‘Abu Khaled from Australia’ dressed in military gear and holding an automatic rifle, flanked by a crowd of armed terrorists, some in masks, who he leads in Islamic chants.

“We will fight you and we will defeat you,” he bragged in the almost two-minute-long video entitled Message of the Mujahid 4.

The Prime Minister’s office has responded to the video, saying it highlights the “very real threat” posed by Islamic State.

But Mr Abbott’s office declined to comment on the indirect threat made to Mr Abbott’s life. As far as The New Daily is aware, this is the first time the PM has been named in an ISIL propaganda video.

“As the Prime Minister has said on many occasions, ISIL is a threat that reaches out to Australia and our allies and partners,” said a spokesperson.

“That is why Australia has joined the Coalition to disrupt and degrade ISIL in Iraq and is giving our law enforcement and security agencies the powers and resources they need to keep Australia and Australians as safe as possible.”

Lawyer for the Elmir family Zali Burrows told The New Daily she has been unable to contact the family since the video was released and thus cannot comment on their behalf, but expressed relief that “at least he’s alive”.

“It’s a shame he wasn’t stopped at the airport when the opportunity was there,” Ms Burrows said.

“Even when this [story] first broke, the reason they spoke through me was because they didn’t want any media attention.

“You can appreciate, if it were your brother or child, you would be devastated.”

The New Daily has been unable to verify the origin of the video, which was at one point uploaded to YouTube before being removed by the website because it violated its terms of use.

Earlier this month Australia joined the US and other Western nations in launching airstrikes on ISIL targets in Iraq. In the video, Elmir scoffed at these attacks, saying ISIL is impervious to Western planes and bombs because Allah is on its side.

“Bring every nation that you want to come fight us. It means nothing to us,” he said.

“Whether it’s 50 nations or 50,000 nations, it means nothing to us.”

What we know about Abdullah Elmir

Fairfax Media has reported that:

• Elmir fled overseas on his 17th birthday in June with a 16-year-old friend named Faiz
• The teenager was “normal”, had just finished high school, and told his mother he was going on a fishing trip
• Elmir’s family heard nothing until he later made contact saying he was “crossing the border”, believed to be the border between Turkey and Iraq.

Elmir is now threatening world domination by ISIL, which he said will not rest until its Black Flag hangs above Buckingham Palace and the White House.

Parliament is currently debating a law aimed at prosecuting Australians like Elmir who travel to fight overseas. The Foreign Fighters Bill would give the Minister for Foreign Affairs the power to declare certain areas, such as Iraq, as no-fly zones.

If the law is passed, a prison sentence of 10 years could await Elmir on his return to Australia, provided he survives the war raging in the country and would ever wish to return.

Airstrikes have already taken their toll on Australian jihadists, with Zakaryah Raad, 22, also from Sydney, believed to have been killed while fighting alongside terrorists.

Prime Minister Abbott has told Parliament that up to 150 Australians may be fighting with ISIL in Syria and Iraq.
