Bacon ban has cafe sizzling with anger

First, there was Slim Dusty’s pub with no beer. Now, there’s actually a cafe with no bacon.

A cafe in Brisbane’s popular Wintergarden shopping centre has been banned from cooking bacon after a nearby store complained about the smell.

According to the Courier Mail, bustling eatery Gramercy Coffee received a letter from Wintergarden centre management ordering them to stop cooking the popular breakfast food.

The letter followed complaints from Michael Yeung, the owner of nearby store Winnie Bridal, who alleged the smell of the bacon was entering his shop through the air conditioning and permeating his expensive couture gowns.

Mitchell Suchowacki, the owner of Gramercy Coffee, described the ban as “incredibly frustrating”.

“The biggest thing was the shock of not knowing anything about it and then having this massive drama arise overnight,” Mr Suchowacki told the paper.

Mr Suchowacki said his cafe had been forced to substitute another variety of ham in order to keep customers happy.

“It all got too much so we just cut bacon out completely and now we serve jamon, which people are happy to have,” he said.

A spokesperson from the Wintergarden shopping centre told the Courier Mail that Gramercy was never allowed to cook bacon under their tenants’ agreement.

“The cooking of bacon impacted the quiet enjoyment of another tenant in the centre and therefore Gramercy were reminded of the items they were able to cook within their Edward St tenancy without an extraction fan,” the spokesperson said.
