Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has accused Deputy Labor Leader Tanya Plibersek of wanting to put people “in harm’s way” to combat Ebola during a fiery morning television exchange.

The pair locked horns on the Nine Network’s Today program following comments from Ms Plibersek that Labor was ‘gravely concerned’ the government was not doing enough in the fight against the virus.

While the United States has sent thousands of troops to West Africa, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Sunday it was ‘irresponsible’ to send medical workers to the region.

Mr Morrison appeared visibly frustrated during the interview, claiming Labor was suggesting putting people “in harm’s way”.

“You know that there is no credible extraction plan to get people out of that place if you direct them in that environment,” Mr Morrison said.

“If you want to play politics with Ebola… then that is exact what you are doing.”

Ms Plibersek said medical volunteers willing to travel to West Africa should have support to go.

“What we’re suggesting is that volunteers who are trained and willing and able to go should have the support of Australian government to do so,” Ms Plibersek said.

“One generous philanthropist have given more than the Australian government.”
