Tigerair Australia is the second airline this month to announce tough new measures in a crackdown on passenger carry-on luggage limits, a report by Fairfax alleges.

After warning passengers for eight months about not exceeding the 10kg limit, Tigerair commercial director Adam Rowe said new fees will be introduced on September 18.

“From now on we are simply asking all passengers to play by the rules as there will be increased monitoring and the risk of a penalty charge for those that ignore them,” Mr Rowe said.

Last week, a spokesperson from Jetstar confirmed the airline would be charging passengers $70 for carry-on luggage over 10 kg, plus an additional $15 for each kilo over 15kg.

The airline has been struggling with passengers sneaking on heavy carry-on luggage instead of paying to check them in.

New Tigerair penalty fees of $70 will be applied to passengers with luggage over 10kg on flights shorter than one hour and 45 minutes, while longer flights will see a charge of $85 applied.

The airline has announced that extra “cabin baggage officers” will be positioned at airports in an attempt to enforce the new carry-on baggage rules.
