A taxi driver has been crushed between two cars and killed in a hit-and-run in Melbourne’s south while he was exchanging details with a motorist over a minor collision.

Police said no-one was injured when a Toyota Corolla ran into the back of a taxi at the intersection of the Nepean Highway and Hawthorn road at Brighton east about 1:00am (AEST).

But about 15 minutes later the taxi driver was standing behind the second vehicle when another car ran into it, crushing him between the two cars.

The 66-year-old man died at the scene.

Inspector Bernie Rankin from Victoria Police said the driver of third vehicle, a 46-year-old man, fled the scene on foot.

“Obviously this is a disgraceful incident really where a person is lying on the ground obviously critically injured and this person who’s responsible for the crash has left the scene, it’s dreadful behaviour,” Inspector Rankin said.

He said police were using the air wing and dog squad to try to find the man.

“A number of witnesses have been interviewed, we’re working through a number of sightings obviously this is a disgraceful incident,” he said.

A female passenger of the Toyota also received minor injuries in the second collision and was taken to the Alfred Hospital, police said.
