The grandfather of the Australian boy pictured with a severed head in Syria is pleading for the government to bring the seven-year-old and his siblings home.

The boy, who is the son of terrorist Khaled Sharrouf, was pictured holding the head of a Syrian soldier, in a photo that made shockwaves when it surfaced yesterday.

Mr Sharrouf has been fighting in Iraq and Syria for the Islamic State group, and posted the graphic photo of his son on Twitter alongside the caption “That’s my boy!”.

The boy’s maternal grandfather, Peter Nettleton, told News Corp that he was scared for his grandchildren after hearing about the photo while listening to the radio.

“What life are they going to have now?” asked Mr Nettleton.

The truck driver said that he thought his son-in-law Khaled Sharrouf and daughter Tara had taken their five children to stay in Malaysia while Mr Sharrouf fought in Syria.

“Can’t the government do something to pull these kids away from that man?” he asked.

Mr Nettleton said that he had been estranged from his daughter after she converted to Islam and married her teenage sweetheart, now a convicted terrorist.

Mr Sharrouf was convicted in 2009 of stockpiling bomb-making materials and plotting terrorist attacks in Sydney and Melbourne.

He left the country on his brother’s passport last year after being banned from leaving the country.
