Heigl sues over tweet

Former Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl has sued an American pharmacy chain for sharing a photo of her shopping at their store on social media.

On March 18, Duane Reade posted an image of Heigl carrying shopping bags from their store on their Twitter and Facebook pages.

“Love a quick #DuaneReade run? Even @KatieHeigl can’t resist shopping #NYC’s favourite drugstore,” the tweet read.

The actress claims that the store used her image to promote their brand without permission. Heigl filed the federal lawsuit on Wednesday seeking $6 million in compensation.

“Use of Plaintiffs image under these circumstances improperly exploited Plaintiffs name and likeness, as a celebrity, for Defendant’s commercial advertising and purposes of trade, without authorisation,” the suit states.

According to Reuters, the lawsuit also says that when Heigl represents a brand she is “highly selective and well compensated.”

If Heigl wins the case, she has promised to donate the proceeds to a charity she created in memory of her brother, who passed away in a car crash as a teenager.

Although the case is an important one for the future brand social media use, many Twitter users have criticised Heigl, calling the case petty and self-absorbed. Do you agree?
