Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes’ trial begins

Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes allegedly handed a child a teddy bear and called her a “good girl” after abusing her during a sleepover at his Sydney home, a court has heard.

The former Australian TV star is on trial in the Downing Centre District Court in Sydney after pleading not guilty to 11 charges relating to sexual and indecent assault.

The court was told that before giving the girl the teddy bear Hughes used her hand to masturbate himself.

On Monday, the first day of the trial, the court heard there were five complainants, including a former child actor, who alleges Hughes exposed himself while on set.

Crown prosecutor Gina O’Rourke said the father of one victim was friends with Hughes and his wife and the families would socialise in the 1970s and 1980s.

On one occasion the victim, was allegedly asleep at Hughes’ home when he entered a bedroom and sexually assaulted her.

Ms O’Rourke said Hughes placed his hands under the victim’s blankets, rubbed her vagina and licked her cheek.

“You will hear that he left the room and the complainant started crying,” Ms O’Rourke told the jury.

One month later, when the victim and her parents were at Hughes’ home for a party, Hughes allegedly assaulted the victim again.
