‘We’re on holiday’, bikies tell cops

· Bikies challenge looms
· Qld Premier concerned about bail

The five Victorian men arrested for breaking controversial anti-bike laws in Queensland have told police they were just holidaying on the Gold Coast.

The reason for the alleged bikies’ trip to the glitter strip is under investigation, however police intelligence suggests they had contacted Queensland bikies during their stay.

Four of them were on bail for serious matters in Victoria when they were arrested, police say.

One of the five men is believed to be the sergeant at arms of the Melbourne chapter of the Hells Angels.

The accused men were the first interstate bikies to be charged under new Queensland anti-bikie laws, which make it an offence for gang members to gather in public.

Police will allege the men walked down the street together and met at a hotel bar during their stay.

Detective Inspector Brendan Smith says their arrests send a strong warning to interstate bikies thinking about gathering in the sunshine state.

“Just because they’re based in another state doesn’t mean they’re exempt from the legislation,” he told reporters on Sunday.

Det Insp Smith said it appears the bikies had staggered their arrival to the Gold Coast, with some flying and others driving in.

They were without bikes and weren’t wearing club colours when they were arrested, he said.

Three are alleged members of the Hells Angles, while two are accused of being part of the Comanchero gang.

The men are aged between 23 and 31 and reside in Dandenong, southeast of Melbourne.

They are due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
