Perpetual chief executive and Financial Services Council chairman Geoff Lloyd is calling on the government to scrap non-concessional and annual caps on superannuation contributions.

The call comes as the government is embroiled in an internal dispute over its attempts to reduce the levels of both concessional and non-concessional caps. The dispute has dragged on since the proposed changes were released in the budget in May.

Mr Lloyd, who became FSC chairman last month, appears to be tiring of the disputes and says the government should leave the $2 trillion super system alone to create certainty.

“All it is is tinkering for short- termism and the budget rather than helping Australians plan to live well in their retirement,” Mr Lloyd said.

“I feel like I’ve been debating concessions and caps for 25 years,” The Australian reported Mr Lloyd as saying at the Perpetual results announcement this week.

“If we’re going to have a lifetime cap … we don’t believe you should have any non-concessional caps or annual caps either. If you have an aggregate cap, the sooner you get there the better.”

“We’ve got a retirement system that is coming on 25 years of age and it used to be the pride of the world.”

“We did have an election, but we now need to land this and get on with it.

“We need to think about leaving the system to rest so Australians can get certainty and start investing and saving for retirement.”
