Job ads up for the fifth month

Things are looking better for jobseekers, with the number of job advertisements rising for the fifth consecutive month.

Job ads on the internet and in newspapers rose 0.2 per cent in October and were up 7.5 per cent for the year, figures from ANZ show.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan said the increased demand for labour should feed in to better employment growth, thanks to improved investment in the non-mining sectors of the economy.

“The outlook for the economy is improving,” he said.

“The transition to non-mining drivers of growth appears to be occurring, if only gradually.”

Mr Hogan said while several economic indicators suggested the labour market had improved, it was hard to determine its true condition because of technical problems the Australian Bureau of Statistics is having with its jobs data.

“Until the ABS has fully addressed the problems with the survey, we do not expect to get a clear read on the underlying state of the labour market,” he said.

Official jobs figures for October will be released on Thursday, with the unemployment rate expected to stay steady at 6.1 per cent, according to an AAP survey of 11 economists.

The number of people with jobs is expected to rise by 10,000 after a fall of 29,700 in September.
