Christmas is usually a time for exorbitant expenditure, but the competitive low-cost travel market has produced several December deals that could help you save on your next trip.

It has been a bumper year for air travel, with iconic Australian brand Qantas posting a billion-dollar profit and consumers winning out in the low-price carrier war.

Reflecting the retail market in general, brands such as Jetstar and Tigerair are offering their new-year deals earlier, with flights to Fiji and south-east Asia on sale now for under $200.

Some of the flights are only available on restricted dates, while others are more flexible – but travellers will have to act quickly, with most sales ending next week.

The New Daily has rounded up a selection of the most attractive domestic and international deals below.

Whitsundays from $59

Jetstar is celebrating its new direct route from Sydney to the Whitsundays from next April with $59 flights.

Qantas’ cheaper sibling will be flying to the tropical paradise three-times weekly.

Fly between April 27 and June 20, or between July 18 and September 17 to capitalise on the deal – but make sure to book before December 20.

Fly to Phuket for $135

Tigerair has joined up with Singapore’s budget carrier Scoot to offer one-way flights to Phuket from Perth for just $135.

From Melbourne and Sydney the trip will set you back just $199, or $189 from the Gold Coast.

The deal also wraps up on December 20.

Tiger has also extended its Christmas sale, which includes Melbourne to Wellington, New Zealand, from $125 and Sydney to Uluru from $105.

Fly to Fiji from $199

Confirming that airlines know Australians love tropical island getaways, Virgin is offering heavily discounted flights to Fiji.

Those departing from Sydney get the best deal, with one-way flights starting at $199.

Those leaving from Brisbane can fly for $209, while Melbournites will have to shell out $299.

Travel dates are for 2017 between January 31 and April 5, April 30 to June 15, and July 23 to September 14.

The deal also includes 23kg of checked baggage, and ends midnight on December 19.

Virgin is also offering some tempting deals on flights to Hamilton Island if you travel between February and June next year.

The airline has one-way flights to the popular honeymoon destination from $165 – but you will need to book before December 20.

Fly to Bali for $292

While slightly more expensive than the above airlines, Qantas is often the airline of choice for those who enjoy creature comforts in the air.

The carrier is offering one-way flights from Melbourne to Bali for $292, between January 22 and March 26.

They are also spruiking return flights to Beijing for $649 and Honolulu for $849 return – both from Melbourne.
