TikTok’s ‘Mob Wife’ craze goes beyond looks

TikTok has spoken and we have a new aesthetic for 2024: Mob Wife Aesthetic.

In 2023, hair, make up and fashion trends came and went, and it’s likely this year will be no different.

The clean girl aesthetic reigned supreme last year, with hair and make-up done to look as though you put in minimal effort. Along the way there were trends which played on that, like the strawberry girl make up.

There was also a lot of buzz around “quiet luxury”, with designer logos being overlooked for pricey pieces that only those in the know really know how much they cost.

However, the pendulum has seemed to have swung and we are starting the year off strong with a whole new vibe.

Think Carmela Soprano and Adriana La Cerva from The Sopranos.

Instead of slicked-back hair, big hair is being embraced, outfits are flashy and luxurious, but perhaps the best part of the aesthetic is the attitude that comes with it.

How to get the mob wife look

TikTok is already awash with videos on how to get the mob wife look.

Perhaps the most coveted item to complete the look is a fur coat – real, but second-hand, of course. The fur coat completing the looks makes sense as the Northern Hemisphere is in winter, so it’s not only on-trend but fashionable.

Adjacent to the fur coat is animal prints and lots of them, because the key word with the aesthetic is “bold”.

Wearing black head-to-toe, as if you are already mourning the death of your fake mobster husband is a must and best complimented with flashy gold jewellery.

Many of the people subscribing to the look are referencing media from the 1990s as inspiration, hence the women of The Sopranos.

However, there have been plenty of mob wives over the decades which could be the source of inspiration, like Elvira Hancock in Scarface, which may not be as in-your-face as 90s wives, but it is still incredibly glamorous.

As for hair and make-up, hair needs to be big and bouncy. Make up needs to be striking, and complete contrast to the clean girl aesthetic.

If in doubt, go for red lips and red nails, which should also be quite long to get the look.

Mob wife energy

Looking the part is only half the battle with the mob wife aesthetic.

To fully encompass the aesthetic, you need to embrace the energy and essence of a mob wife, at least that is what the TikTok girls think.

“Would a mob wife text him first?” TikTok user Avery questioned, in a popular video about the changing aesthetic.

“Would a mob wife check her Insta story 25 times to see what it looks like from someone else’s point of view? I don’t think so.”

She explained the new trend was all about “filthy wealth”, but that hasn’t got anything to do with money.

Avery added that a mob wife would drink her coffee out of a martini glass, she knows her boundaries, she’s “booked and busy” and is by all means a “girl boss” but would “step on” anyone who called her that.

Another TikTok user, who goes by The Sweet Paisana online took Avery’s video one step further and called on her followers to imagine what a mob wife would do in various scenarios.

“Mob wife energy is so just something we all need to evoke, embody in 2024. It’s confident, it’s in your face. Gone are the days of quiet luxury, as many have said, it’s flashy, it’s in your face, it’s bold,” she said.

“There’s a reason mob wives are iconic. They’re a piece of iconography — I just love that word — in pop culture. Would a mob wife wear a Birkin? No, she’s wearing her Louis (Vuitton) and her Gucci bags.”
