More than 10 years after the final episode of The Office aired, the world in which the mockumentary exists is expanding.

According to Variety, the new series will not be a spin-off or a reboot of the US version of The Office, but rather it will be an entirely new series, with a new cast.

What will tie the new series to the beloved comedy is the “documentary crew” who helped tell the enduring story of Dunder Mifflin.

“The documentary crew that immortalised Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters,” a tagline for the show reads.

Additionally, the original’s creator will be working on the new series and some details about the ensemble cast have been revealed already.

Who will star in the new iteration of The Office?

It is unclear what the name of the new series will be, but we do know that Domhnall Gleeson has been cast.

The 40-year-old Irish actor, who is the son of Brendon Gleeson, has had roles in several Hollywood movies including The Revenant and Ex Machina.

He will be starring alongside Sabrina Impacciatore, an Italian actor best known for her role in the second season of The White Lotus.

Beyond Gleeson and Impacciatore, no other details as to who will be joining the cast to tell the story of the struggling Midwestern newspaper have been revealed.

Behind the camera

Fans of The Office will know the US version was an adaptation of the UK series by the same name.

In the early 2000s, Ricky Gervais co-wrote and starred in The Office and the original became one of Britain’s most successful TV shows ever, and eventually led to the Emmy-winning American remake on NBC.

Gervais served as a producer on the American remake, which starred Steve Carell as the woeful but hilarious manager of Dunder Mifflin.

It has also been confirmed he will be an executive producer of the new production, alongside Stephen Merchant, the co-creator of The Office who was heavily involved in both iterations.

The new series has been developed by Greg Daniels, who created the US version of The Office, and Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman.

NBCUniversal Entertainment president Lisa Katz noted in a statement that even more than 10 years after the final episode of the US version of The Office aired, the hit comedy remains relevant.

“The acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” Katz said.
